Air suspension and Its Importance

What is air suspension?

When you are looking to upgrade your current car and are searching for your next new or used car in the luxury category, it is like that certain features like air suspension service comes as standard or as an optional extra.

The main benefit is the comfort and ride quality and is often described as ‘helping the car to sail over bumps. The standard/traditional spring suspension can produce a tougher driving experience.

Air suspension is regarded as on of the best advanced technology in recent years for cars but it is normally found in more expensive cars and especially in 4x4’s/jeeps/SUV’s.

There are 2 setbacks when considering air suspensions:

  • This normally comes as an optional extra so will cost more overall.
  • Expensive to replace when becoming faulty.

The reason why it costs more to replace than the traditional suspension parts, for example, the springs comes down to the costs of making the product.  When they are working its great but when they are not then this could be one bumpy ride. This is when you will need an air suspension specialist.

Whilst driving your car you will notice that the whole car has either tilted to one side or has lowered totally from its standard hight. Air suspension repair costs are high but even though not recommended, some owners/drivers replace them with the traditional steel springs. If this is something you are considering, then ensure you search for an air suspension specialist near me to avoid any further damage being caused to your cars suspension.

Here are a few examples of what main dealers call their air suspensions:

  • Mercedes-Benz – Airmatic
  • Audi – Adaptive air suspension
  • Porsche – Air suspension with Porsche active suspension management
  • Lexus – Adaptive variable suspension with adjustable hight control
  • Jaguar – Active air suspension
  • Volvo – Four C adaptive air suspension

How do air suspensions work?

The traditional coil steel springs or leaf springs are replaced with stretchy rubber hollers that are pressurised. These monitor the cars driving hight and centre air pressure with the help of a compressor. The driving hight can be adjusted, by a lever or button inside the car, for different road surfaces or road conditions due to weather for a better driving experience like ‘driving on a cloud’.
